A mother's worst nightmare came true for Amber Kippley of Farmington when her 2-year-old
son Andrew was diagnosed in 1996 withneuroblastoma, a form of cancer that attacks the nerve tissues. Neuroblastoma is
the fourth most common cancer found in children in the United States. A malignant tumor in Andrew's abdomen was surgically
removed, and the cancer went into remission after one year of treatment. After two years, oncologists told her Andrew
was considered cured. But to her horror, it returned after 10 years cancer-free. Only 2 percent of neuroblastoma
cases are found in children older than 10 years old. Oncologists attempted to remove the tumor in his pelvis but, during
the surgery, they discovered it was larger than expected, invading the kidneys, intestine, colon, bladder and encasing several
vital nerves and arteries. The tumor is pressing on his spinal cord and, in some cases, such a tumor can cause paralysis.
Taking time off to care for Andrew has taken a toll on the family, emotionally and financially.
